Match captains report by T.C.Gavriel for Barnet 1st team

The team matches have been played with much comradry and team spirit. Interesting journeys on the away matches have featured examples like driving in total pitch black darkness in an effort to get to other club venue! Sometimes it has felt like a challenging race to get to the oppositions venues before running out of time on the clock and all being defaulted!

The first team have bounced back after their first two depressing defeats (one was a double points match)  in the season to win 4 games in a row. Their winning run was ended however by a loss against Powdermill I. The following game shows is an example of one the dramatic games from that encounter.

T.Gavriel v H.Tebbs (Barnet I v Powdermill I)

1.d4 f5 2.e4 fxe4 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.f3 d5 5.fxe4 dxe4 6.Bc4 Bf5 7.Nge2 e6 8.h3 Nd5 9.00 Nxc3 10.bxc3 Bd6 11.Rb1 Nd7 12.Rxb7 Nb6 13.Bb5+ Nd7 14.g4 Bg6 15.Bf4 Bxf4 16.Nxf4 00 17.Nxe6 Qh4 18.Kg2 e3 19.Nxf8 Be4+ 20.Kh2 Rxf8 21.Bc4+ Kh8 22.Rxf8+ Nxf8 23.Qf1 Qe7 24.Rb5 Nd7 25.Qf4 Bc6 26.Qxe3 Qxe3 27.Rb8+ Nxb8 0-1

After 23 ..Qe7 I suddenly panicked and thought I was being mated. I calmed down to discover Rb5 which left me the exchange and a pawn up. I then celebrated and was in a funny state of mind. This later did not help me to find 26 Rb1 or Qxc7. Instead I found a way to lose my queen and rook for nothing! I had thought that Qxe3 was a forced mate. Unfortunately not! One of the things that had played on mind at that moment in the game was my previous encounter with Howard in this league, who had finished me off with a nice combination. Revenge is sweet, but nice combinations can sometimes backfire!
