Paul Martin (Barnet) v B. Turnham (Royston I)
Herts League Div 2 29.4.96
1.d4 Nf6 2.Nc3 d5 3.e4 dxe4 4.f3 exf3 5.Nxf3 Bf5 6.Ne5 e6
7.g4 The Tartakower variation of the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit. I have played this line numerous times, the continuation 7..Bg6 Qf3 c6 being the expected approach. My opponent had also studied this line... as his choice of 7th move showed.
7...Ne4 Sawyer gives this as "very wild, very complex". It was a new move to me, and my reply isn't regarded as particularly good. 8.Qf3 Qxd4 9.gxf5 Nxc3
10.Nxf7 There is no way back here, 10 bxc3 is clearly bad, whilst Qxc3 fails to Bb4
10...Kxf7 11.fxe6+ Ke8 12.Qf7+ Kd8 13.Bg5+ Be7 14.Qxe7+ Kc8
15.Bd3 The last two moves lose the thread of the attack. 15 Be2 was better. 15...Nd5 16.Qf7 Qe5+ 17.Be2 Qxg5 18.Rf1 Qh4+ 19.Rf2 Qe7 20.000 Qxf7
21.Rxf7 Here exf7 is likely to lose the pawn after Nf6 and Rf8 21...Nf6 22.Bf1 Rd8 23.Re1 Nc6 24.Bh3 b5 25.e7+ Kb7
26.exd8Q Rxd8 The pawn has been converted into a small material advantage, but the game still needs to be won a second time. 27.Bg2 Kb6 28.Bxc6 Kxc6 29.Rxg7 Rd6 30.Ree7 Nd5 31.Ref7 Kb6 32.Rxh7 Rc6 33.Rh3 Nb4 34.c3 a5 35.Rf5 Na6 36.Rhh5 b4 37.Rb5+ Ka7 38.Rxa5 bxc3 39.b4 Kb8 40.b5 Rc5 41.Rh8+ Ka7 42.Rxa6+ Kb7 43.Raa8 Line
