Barnet chess club report
40th Capes Trophy event, 1999
held at the Angel Community Centre, Edmonton
(Pre-season fun blitz tournament!)
3rd draft, 18th September
Background
John Capes started playing chess at the relatively late age of
29 years old in 1969. He conceived the idea of a lightning chess team tournament
in that same year, soon after he
joined Enfield chess club. This is where he met WB Harze (County champion at the time)
who introduced him to the pleasure of lightning chess.
Some of the elderly people at the club at the time were opposed to this form of
chess, because of fear of damage to the clocks. However this did not dissuade
John from organising this excellent annual 5 minute tournament- and he did so
for the next 40 years and plans to continue!
This year
This year - the 40th year of the event, was a particularly fiercely contested 5 minute tournament, with clubs from the London, North Circular and Hertfordshire chess leagues present. The attendance was very good.

Barnet had won the tournament last year, and it seemed a daunting task to retain it this year, because of the presence of some very strong teams. Hackney for example, fielded 4 teams, with their 1st team having 2 International masters- IM Simon Ansell and IM Miroslav Houska !

Fellow Barnet player Costas Karayannis
(playing for his closer to home chess club Chingford on this occasion)

The Drama
Barnet were cruising through the tournament winning the 1st 8 matches! (1 bye round) - including a 3-1 defeat of Hackney A team (Left of above picture). Then in the 2nd from last round, we lost 4-0 to Hackney B (right of above picture). We needed 2.5/4 from our last round match against Imperial Knights to secure 1st place. We managed to win 4-0, thus retaining the Capes Trophy won last year!
After the 11 rounds of 5 minute chess, Barnet scores were:
| Board | Barnet player | Score |
| 1 | Paul Georghiou | 9.5/11 |
| 2 | Tryfon Gavriel | 10/11 |
| 3 | Alex Ethelontis | 9/11 |
| 4 | Eddie Holland | 8/11 |
| 36.5/44 |
Tryfon Gavriel was unlucky not to win the "board prize" - prize for the highest scoring player on any board. This was won by Michael Tasker (Hackney B) with a perfect 11/11 score !
